Not too long ago I experienced a major melt down on my computer, I am afraid to say it was due to a virus. It seems the Anti-virus I had at the time was having a conflict with my laptop; as a result, a nasty virus snuck in my system and started playing around. At first, I did not realize what it was, web pages did not load correctly, and programs either would not load or would freeze when they did. I even got the dreaded Blue Screen.
I like many others out there whose computers now have viruses even though they have an anti-virus program. My anti-virus and my computer had conflicts, and I did not realize what it was until it was almost too late. A friend of mine mentioned that I might have a virus; I stated to her that I had a program and it was running. It was then that I learned that not all anti-viruses catch all viruses. She recommended I do a scan on my computer. I did using my old anti-virus and it showed up clean. I was then told to run another virus remover tool, I did and low and behold, there were quite a few of the little rotten things hiding in my PC. It seems that my anti-virus had not done its job. Thankfully, though I found one that did, AVG Free Edition.
Once I got rid of the viruses, my programs started working again, my Internet did not hang up, and my life on my computer returned back to normal. So why am I telling you my misfortune with Computer Viruses, simple really. I was fortunate enough to have a friend help me in my time of need and I want to be able to help you before yours gets as bad as mine did.

Say that someone already has SpyBot: Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware – those two programs alone are not enough to stop some parasites, like the virus-laden CoolWebSearch. If it’s from Yahoo! it must be effective. This program fits just right into the Yahoo! browser. Each search filters out spyware and other threats.

Anti-Spammers Need To Develop Better Manners
I sent my e-zine out last week and I received a copy of it back. It had been forwarded to me by a subscriber. In the subject line was a two word sentence; since most publications and websites frown upon vulgarity, obscenity, and profanity, I have spared you the exact wording. Be assured, however, that Miss Manners would definitely not approve.
It is understandable the frustration that people feel when they are inundated with unsolicited commercial e-mail. I myself get more than my fair share.
Despite my Internet Service Provider (ISP) enabling a spam filter and in spite of configuring my own e-mail program filters, I still get spam.
However, the situation with my subscriber is different. He opted in and confirmed his subscription. I use an outside service to handle my mailing lists, in part, to protect myself from false spam complaints.
There are a number of possibilities here. Perhaps my dear subscriber forgot that he subscribed and honestly believed that he received spam.
Another possibility is that he didn't enjoy the content. The correct response when someone offers you something you don't want is "No, thank you" not "Expletive deleted".
If you are offered dessert after dinner by your host and you don't want any, simply say "No, thanks." If you accept one piece of pie and then you're offered another, you may either accept or decline.
My subscriber could simply have unsubscribed. Instead, he retaliated (either because he believes I'm spamming him or he doesn't like the newsletter).
He said "yes" when he subscribed; he can always say "no" by unsubscribing. Again, "No, thank you" not "Expletive deleted".
Related to this rudeness is the ignorance some America Online, Inc. (AOL) subscribers show. By ignorance, I mean that they may not even realize they are doing anything wrong when they report e-mail they don't like as spam.
AOL makes it very easy for their subscribers to report spam. I would say they make it too easy.
Just click the button "Report Spam". Unfortunately, there is no notation near that button that says "If you subscribed, just unsubscribe." No, simply "Report Spam."
And they do. Rather than unsubscribe, some AOL subscribers will report your e-zine as spam. They opted in and subscribed. They confirmed their subscription by e-mail. Their name, e-mail address, IP address, and date and time of subscribing have all been recorded. But, they are reporting you as a spammer.
This, to me, goes beyond rude, as it could affect the reputation and livelihood of the one being reported.
I wish I could say that receiving obscenities or threats by e-mail is rare. Sadly, this is not the first time for me.
Among the many messages I receive are some that say that the e-mail I tried to send (from some strange or nonsensical name at my domain) was undeliverable or blocked and is being returned to me. Of course, I never sent that e-mail in the first place.
Occasionally, I receive rude (sometimes threatening) e-mails from people who thought I sent them some of these spoofed e-mails. This is the equivalent of swearing at and threatening someone who you believe allowed his dog to defecate on your lawn. The only problem is that the man doesn't have a dog.
Again, I sympathize with those who are irritated by spam. I just wish they would direct their indignation at the spammers instead of me. In fact, Miss Manners would have reminded us all that there is never any excuse for rudeness.

If you’ve recently purchased a computer, or are just learning about using email and the internet, you may have heard about computer viruses and anti-virus software. Part One -Installation
This is a very easy to install file. Just follow the step by step instructions, agree to the TOS, and you are done
Part Two -Scanning
To scan your computer for spyware:
1: Open Windows Anti Spyware
2: In the bottom right, it says "run a scan". Click it.
3: This gives previous scan results, to run another scan, click the button in the mid left labeled "Run Scan now". As soon as you click, the scan begins. Recomindation: Exit out of all Internet functions, included AIM, downloads, websites, etc.
Part Three -Deletion
When Spyware is found, wait for the scan to complete. It will then take you to an option page in which you have a choice of ignoring (NEVER do this) quarintining, or deleting the result. Do whatever the program recommends (says to the left of the item)
Part Four -Updating
Unless you disabled the feature, Windows Anti-Spyware updates automatically. If this is the case, check for updates by going to
File -> Check for Updates. Any new updates will be installed after that.

10 Anti-aging Tips
Isn't it sad that after 30, your body starts to go downhill? Most of us start to put on weight, skin starts to sag, sunspots appear on the face, hair start to turn white or fall off, less energy to party through the night, get hang over the next day if we stay up beyond midnight, take a longer time to recover from colds and flus....
It gets even more depressing after 40. Illnesses like high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, start to haunt us.
What causes aging?
Everyday we are exposed to free radicals, from the environment and from within our bodies. Free radicals are unstable molecules that steal electrons from other molecules and attack our body. They attack our cells causing them to die. Or they attack the DNA in our cells, leading to mutated cells. The free radicals accelerate the aging effects on our bodies and increases our chances of getting cancer and other diseases related to the skin, liver, respiratory, immune, cardiovascular and nerve systems.
Anti-oxidants are the body’s first line of defence against the attacks from free radicals. Although our body produces anti-oxidants naturally, they may not be sufficient as we face an onslaught of free radicals from the unhealthy food that we eat, the stressful lifestyle that we lead and the polluted environment that we live in.
Is it any wonder then that rural folks who live in the countryside with fresh air and eat more natural and less processed food lead longer and healthier lives than us urbanites?
If you are not these country folks, what anti-aging methods can you use so that you look and feel like 35 when you are fifty? What if you are already in your forties and fifties and have not tried any anti-aging methods? Is it too late to reverse the clock?
It's really better late than never. It does not matter whether you are thirty, forty or fifty etc.
Here are 10 tips for anti-aging.
1) Eat less carbohydrate and protein. I've found from experience that carbohydrate is the worst enemy of a trim tummy. For protein, take more low fat ones like fish, egg, bean instead of meat.
2) Eat more vegetables and fruits. We all know this, but how many diligently eat more vege and fruits? One good way is to eat them when you feel peckish between meals, instead of reaching out for chips or biscuits or chocolates.
3) Supplement with anti-oxidants. This will prevent free-radical damage to your cells. For simplicity and comprehensive anti-aging supplementation, look for a supplement that contains all the necessary vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants in one pack.
4) Exercise more. Physical exercise can delay or prevent illnesses like hypertension, obesity, heart diseases and osteoporosis.
5) Avoid exposure to excessive sun. Our skin becomes dry and leathery with age. Sunspots would start spreading on the face. So put on a sunscreen after your facial moisturiser, or get a moisturiser with sunscreen. Don't just apply to your face and neglect the rest of your body. Many people have dry and itchy skin because they do not put moisturiser on their bodies.
6) Don't smoke or drink too much alcohol.
7) Use anti-aging and firming skincare products. Skin care products with antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can support collagen production.
8) Detox periodically. Detoxing 2-4 times a year is good for your blood and liver.
9) Keep an active mind. Read more and learn new things like computer stuff or pick up a new hobby.
10) Don't worry, be happy. Take life easy, don't stress yourself up unnecessarily. If there's nothing you can do to change a situation, quit fretting about it. Take up meditation or yoga or something relaxing.

Anti-virus Tools And Why We Need Them
Have you ever read online or had a friend tell you about how their computer stopped responding, an error screen popped up, or even maybe that there computer was compromised. If so then you have heard about some of the horror stories associated with computer viruses and the damage they can do. However there is hope though it is called an Anti-virus. These programs were designed to help keep our computers safe from attacks. Think of it this way your computer gets a cold (virus) and you give it cold medicine (the anti-virus).
There are a variety of Anti-viruses out there, some are extremely expensive and huge monstrous programs while others are free and not really that large. One free anti-virus is AVG Free Edition from GRISOFT. There are versions of the programs that cost, however for most home computers the free version will work fine. Another fact about some anti-viruses is that not all come with spy ware and Trojan protection; make sure to see what yours has and what you might need.
When it comes to any program a little bit of common sense is recommended. First you need to know what operating system you are running, and how many Megabytes your computer has in it. When you know these things then you can see if your PC meets their requirements for installation. If not I do not recommend running the software, for the simple fact if it is to big to run while your computers operating system and few other programs like the internet is running then I just don’t recommend doing it. However if your computer meets the requirements then by all means go for it.
Any one who wants to get their moneys worth out of their PC will have a good anti-virus installed. And free of course.

How Anti-Spyware Helps
If your computer is behaving oddly, is slowing down, gets hung up in the middle of your work, or is bedeviled with “pop-ups,” then it is probably infected with spyware.
Spyware gets into your computer due to due to something you have done, like clicking a button on a pop-up window, or installing free games, programs or software.
It’s estimated that anywhere from twenty to fifty percent of online network traffic is accomplished by spyware.
In fact, on eighty percent of all corporate systems networks incorporate ad-ware; fifteen percent of these networks have system monitoring software running in the background.
There are lots of applications for the removal of spyware and for spyware detection, like Spybot, Ad-aware, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware. These provide vigorous detect+J9ion and protection from spy-ware as well as internet cookie identification (which then lets you know where the cookies came from).
A good anti-spyware program should have the following:
1. Definition updates. This tool lets the user download updates to their anti-spyware in order to further protect their computer as new spyware is developed.
2. Real-time monitoring. This is similar to the anti-virus “real-time scanner.” That means the anti-spyware software runs continuously in the background – even when you’re busy working on other projects on your computer. When a malicious program is found trying to install spyware on your computer, the real-time monitoring is always ready to react to it. This is a feature usually available only on paid versions of anti-spyware.
3. “Restore browser settings.” While you have to be adept at digging around in the advanced settings or advanced tool menu of your computer in order to find it, most anti-spyware have an option that can re-set the setting of their web-browser if you’ve been the victim of “browser hijacking.” You must, however, be able to quickly restore the browser to its previous home page, or to reestablish the factory defaults.
4. Safe removal and rollback. An anti-spyware shouldn’t just remove spyware, it should be able to do so in a safe manner. It would be useless to remove spyware and find an empty blue-screen the next time you turn on your computer. All spyware should be able to be removed without damage to your computer. Some anti-spyware, however, may be too vigilant. Your program should not leave you without a way to restore your computer to its original state. This might mean the spyware will still be there, but at least you won’t lose your important files.
Most programs don’t find it necessary to be that aggressive. There are lots of programs out there that do a good job. Such programs examine the contents of the “operating system file” in the Windows registry. Then they eliminate files and entries that correspond to their list of identified spyware.
So before you go browsing through the internet, always make it a point to install anti-spyware programs. They offer so many advantages that help you fight against and defend yourself from upsetting and annoying spyware.

What Is Anti-spam Filter?
Spam is unsolicited and unwanted email. Other common names of spam are spam mail, bulk email or just junk mail. Today, spam has reached such monumental proportions that almost every other message we receive is spam. Protecting the inbox with anti-spam filter has become one of the barest necessities for almost all PC users.
In a few words, anti-spam software helps detect spam. It is a program that detects unsolicited and unwanted e-mails, and doesn’t let them slipping into your inbox. The anti-spam program is installed onto your computer and filters your inbound emails. The email filtering is carried out based on a number of criteria. These can be specific words in the subject line or in the body of the message, type of files attached to the message, images embedded into the message. You could set the filter to check the sender’s email address out. If you have your own whitelist or address book with trusted email addresses, you could arrange the anti-spam filter to refer to that whitelist. It also can detect known spammers by checking a blacklist of habitual spam senders maintained by certain Internet Service Providers. If the email sender is on the blacklist, the message is rejected.

Such software looks for keywords and tries to interpret their meanings in the sentences. Certain spam filters reject the messages if they come to you in the form of "Undisclosed Recipients", and accept the emails where your email address is in the “To” or “Cc” fields.

Why Do We Need Anti-Spam Software?
Spam, otherwise known as junk email or unsolicited commercial email; is quickly becoming on of the most prevalent complaints of internet users. Not only is it annoying, but it is quickly becoming a dangerous and potentially expensive problem for businesses as well as individuals.
How is it dangerous?
First and foremost, spam is one of the leading causes for clogged networks and slow connections. American Online, one of the nation’s largest internet service providers; transmits over 8 trillion spam email messages a year. Those messages tie up valuable bandwidth and can slow down entire networks. Although end users will rarely see a significant change in their connections, they can rest assured that a noteworthy portion of their monthly bill is paying for that lost bandwidth.
Most spam includes images or weblinks within it commercial content. Although some of it is begin or at worst annoying, an increasing portion contains sexually explicit content. Spam messages frequently contain pornographic pictures or links to sex-related websites.
These messages are not suited for children yet can easily be accidentally opened by minors. In addition to simple sexual content, some of the most severely sexually explicit spam can contain images of such illegal and offensive acts such as bestiality or child pornography.
Aside from slowing connections or carrying unwanted pornography, spam is the leading cause of transmitted computer viruses. Computer viruses are programs which run malicious code which can damage computer systems, delete files and steal personal information. These viruses are often hidden in an email messages as attachments such as a pictures. Email transmitted viruses can render entire systems inoperable and delete important documents forever.
How can you stop it?
The easiest and most simple way to stop unwanted email is to employ a spam blocker. Spam blockers are manufactured by a variety of companies and be anywhere from free to costing upwards of 50$.
There are three basic types of spam blocking software. The first is a key-word blocker. These programs examine the header and body of an email message looking for a series of predefined criteria. For example, a program could be instructed to flag or block any email message containing the word “sex”.
Although seemingly straightforward, the spam blocker also has to stop any spelling variation of sex such as sexx or s_e_x. Although this type of spam blocker can do very well at stopping spam, it also has a tendency to block personal emails which may or may not contain flagged words.
The second type of spam blocker is an address list blocker which blocks or flags any emails not coming from a predefined list of addresses (such as the user’s address book).
Although this type of spam blocker does a very good job of not blocking personal emails from friends or family, it can inadvertently delete important messages from users not on the original predefined list. This can make it very easy to miss potentially important yet unexpected emails.
The third type of spam blocker is actually a hybrid of the aforementioned varieties. It will filter emails from known friendly accounts directly to the inbox while holding potentially dangerous emails in the filter. The user can then go in and sort through emails from either friendly strangers (non spam emails from unfamiliar addresses) or unfriendly strangers (spam emails from unfamiliar addresses).
Although these programs do require a slight amount of user interaction, they can protect your computer and keep you from inadvertently deleting important emails.

Anti Virus, Protect Yourself
There are so many great things about the internet you know that there is going to be problems. And there are! Identity theft, fraud, and maybe the largest most problematic is the epidemic of computer viruses that are wreaking havoc. These viruses are different scripts (if you can call them that) written for purposes of destruction. It is the classic "minority of trouble makers ruining it for the vast majority of the rest of us." So what sorts of viruses do we worry about and get anti virus programs for.
Well, there are all sorts of different kinds of virus-type things traveling around in cyber space and require the protection of an anti virus tool. Examples include worms, spiders, spyware, and adware. They have a variety of effects ranging from pure destruction to actually taking sensitive information off of a computer's hard drive.
Spyware is an example of the latter effect. It is designed to come in via the internet (usually involves a download of some sort) and to search through the hard drive looking for sensitive and profitable information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and online preferences, and search or surf histories. The potential for badness with these is very real and very worth getting protection in the form of anti virus software tool for.
Anyway, as you may or may not know, there has been a new revolution of security (anti virus) software in response to this new demand for online security. This software ranges widely in both price and effectiveness. The software also generally offers both "treatment" and prevention of computer viral infections. That is to say that there is usually a scanning feature offered that is able to detect old infestations and to either quarantine them or sometimes it can actually repair the damage. The other feature then is to disallow new infestations. This prevention is accomplished with daily scanning of anything new, for example downloads or email, and warning user of anything suspicious and recommending action.
My recommendation is to get a more well known software package and be willing to spend a bit, because after all "you pay for what you get." Good bets are the anti virus software tools that are sold in computer, office supply, or electronic stores. You want to look and make sure that it has an automatic on line updates that allow your protection to stay as up-to-date as possible.

Need For A New Anti-Virus Model
This is the second in a series of articles highlighting reasons why we need a new model for anti-virus and security solutions.
Reason #1: the Basic Model
Anti-virus software vendors still rely on yesterday’s methods for solving today’s problems: they wait for the next virus to wreak havoc and then produce a solution. That worked for a long time when a virus would take years to traverse the world. But in this fast-paced Interet-crazed world we live in today, this type of solution is no longer applicable. Now a virus can traverse the world and infect millions of computers in minutes.
In the good old days a virus traveled by floppy disk. Put a floppy in your computer and save some data to it and the virus would infect the floppy. Then unwittingly put the infected floppy in another computer and presto the new computer would become infected. (I’m skimming over a lot of detail here to make a point). So the virus’ progress was slow and steady. Anti-virus vendors had time on their side. They had the time to get a copy of the virus, dissect it, run it through a series of tests to come up with a signature string (see below for definition), put the string into a database of strings to search for when scanning your hard drive (and floppies) and release the new database to the public. Ten years ago this system worked very well.
But now everyone is connected via the Internet. Now, using email as a transport point, it doesn’t take years to gather momentum, instead it takes a matter of minutes. And here is where the model breaks. Step back and ask yourself the following question: if vendors can catch “known and unknown viruses” as their literature states, how then is it that we continue to have virus problems?
The answer lies in the fact that virus authors have been more creative in coming up with new ways to infect and wreak havoc and the software industry has not responded in kind, preferring to stay embedded in its old fashioned methodologies.
Why don’t the old ways work any more, you might ask? It’s relatively simple. Let’s go through the steps.
A virus author unleashes NewVirus via email. He mass mails his virus to thousands of people. Some, not all, unwittingly open the attachment thinking it’s from a friend or the subject is so enticing that they are fooled into opening it without thinking it’s a problem (cf. nude pictures of Anna Kournikova). The email attachment immediately starts emailing everyone in his contact list and embeds itself into his operating system so that it’s activated every time he turns on his computer.
The folks he emails in turn get fooled into thinking the email is valid and they open the attachment. Very quickly all hell breaks loose. Agencies which monitor Internet traffic see problems arising with the sudden spikes in email traffic and they begin to get calls or emails alerting them to the fact that there’s a new problem. Samples are obtained and sent off to anti-virus vendors. They pass the emails through a series of tests to analyze what exactly the virus does and how it does it. Additionally analysis is performed to extract a unique string of 1’s and 0’s to identify this attachment as none other than NewVirus. This is called the signature string. It’s important that whatever string is arrived at does not exist in any other program or piece of software; otherwise, you will get what is commonly called a false positive.

One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware's excellent reputation is well-justified. While the 2007 edition is still free, it does have some new features that may make you reconsider the height of the pedestal it sits on.
First off, the app's updater is now permanently on, running in your system's background. The irony of Ad-Aware running potential spyware is not lost on us. The interface has also been completely overhauled, and it's a bit more confusing. There are six tabs in the nav bar. Status and Scan initiate adware scans, and finish with a line-item list so you can select which components to remove and create a system restore point. The context menu offers some information about suspected adware, though it's light on details.
Other navbar buttons include Ad-Watch, offering real-time defenses but only in the paid version. Plug-ins are disabled in the free version, but the Tools and Plug-ins tab hosts TrackSweep, the new browsing tracks cleaner. Smoothly integrated into the app, it wipes the cache, cookies, and history, and other breadcrumbs left by major browsers. We couldn't help but notice, though, that the Web Update tab, which controls definition file and software updates, ran far more sluggishly than in previous editions, and sometimes even crashed the program.
The Settings tab provides access to auto-scans, browsers, scanning, the interface, and log files. The app does an excellent job of removing most malware components, although rescanning is necessary for a seriously infected machine. The freeware restrictions are mildly irritating, but they're nothing compared to some of the serious stability and background processes in the 2007 version. However, it is a fully functional adware remover, and it continues to do that well. With some hesitation, we recommend Ad-Aware 2007 as part of your arsenal.

XP Users Want Their SP3 Now
It seems doubtful that the reason Microsoft hasn’t released the final SP3 for Windows XP this week is because it “wants the focus to remain on Vista SP1,” as this Beta News piece says. Nevertheless, users have been surprised by the delay. Instead, Redmond this week put out a refresh of SP3 Release Candidate 2 from February.
It’s no surprise that the XP masses are a bit jumpy. The end of XP as we know it is fast approaching, with no more stays of execution imminent. OEMs are to stop selling machines with XP this June, retailers keep trucking until January 2009, and mainstream support for the OS ends in a year. See this detailed timeline from Computerworld for the current dates (which could change again before it’s all said and done).
With Microsoft saying it will have the final SP3 released in the first half of 2008, that could coincide with the first significant date in the phasing out of XP: June 30, when those pre-installs end.InformationWeek calls the situation a Catch-22 for Microsoft, in that the stronger and more robust XP is — and it’s already won that battle with Vista — the less users and enterprises will want to replace it with Vista. And they already don’t want to. Plus, that darned Vista SP1 brought up lots of new problems for a significant number of users. But then Microsoft offered special support…
Over at XP Love Central, aka InfoWorld, Randall C. Kennedy blogs that it’s not a theory that Microsoft is trying to screw over its loyal XP users with this delay; it’s reality. Beta users can see no reason the release shouldn’t be ready right now, and Microsoft’s full attention is on salvaging Vista, Kennedy says.
Or maybe it’s just certain XP users getting the screwing. News.com’s Ina Fried writes that you can pretty much bet that Microsoft is not going to roll over and let Linux take any more of the low-cost laptop market when it could easily hold onto its share with XP. And in emerging markets, both stripped-down and full versions of XP don’t appear to be candidates to be phased out. If Fried is right, look for upmarket buyers to be doing some downmarket shopping, XP style.
